I remember when I discovered the survival economy. My line manager jokingly asked when I was getting a mortgage because then I’d need my job even more. That made me realise that behind the social mask, economic coercion was being used to get human beings to do what they would otherwise not do.

So far, so normal?

But what if we decided not to build our economies that way?

I write about the culture, economics and politics of the survival economy. In your working life, I’m sure you’ve heard these sayings before to describe the way the world feels some days:

"It’s sink or swim"

"It’s a dog-eat-dog world"

"The competition is cutthroat"

Welcome to the survival economy, a place that keeps us from thinking too hard about the systems we live in or how they could be made better.

Inevitable disclaimer:

Don’t think as a writer that I can conjure any of the things I write about but as a creative with a mind in the near future, you’ll find that I write about the things that are either very possible, very likely or in some cases already happening but not explained well. I’m a guide and explainer with neither too much pessimism or optimism and a slant towards what is best for human beings rather than theories or stats.
